Mimco presents...
Five Minutes With:
Inspired by the muses who wear and shape Mimco.
In this series, we sit down with our community of style icons — exploring
their inspirations, the evolution of their style, and how Mimco fits into their
ever-evolving journey of bold, beautiful self-expression.
Welcome to Five Minutes With.
Alice Bennett is the creative genius behind Miss Trixie Drinks Tea — a business born from the self-taught baker and former blogger’s desire to share her culinary creations that has grown into something of a sugar-spun empire: Melbourne’s go-to purveyor of slogan and decorative cakes that’ll have you squealing with delight at their cuteness — and that you’ll actually want to eat.
Alice’s mission is to spread joy through the gift of cake: “Why send flowers when you can send something you can consume AND share with your friends?” Having been privileged enough to sample (and take a million photos of) her creations here at Mimco HQ, we can vouch for the dopamine hit they bring via the eyes and tastebuds.
The colourful, maximalist aesthetic sensibility that defines Alice’s ultra-Instagrammable cakes is echoed in her fun, feminine dress sense, so we were super excited to ask her all about where she finds inspiration, the go-to pieces that define her style, and naturally, what she’s been loving from Mimco. Here’s what we learned from our five minutes with Alice Bennett.
How would you describe your style?
I flip-flop hard between glamazon and kitchen horse! I really love to dress up, but day-to-day, I’m behind the scenes in a very un-chic kitchen. Most days, I need to be in clothes I'm comfortable standing in all day and comfortable getting food dye on (LOL!) When I'm out of the kitchen, I really like to dress up — as I've gotten older I feel so much more confident wearing a heel to lunch with the girls, or changing up my accessories. I love incorporating colour into my wardrobe, I just think life is too short!
Who are your style icons?
Emma Chamberlain, Janelle Monae (she is without a doubt the best dressed at the Met Gala every year), Zara McDonald, Stuart Walford and Dua Lipa.
From a young age, I was inspired by my grandma, Patricia. She always looked put together in a way that felt natural and effortless — something I have tried to carry with me ever since.
Is there a current trend that you are loving?
I typically don't lean into trends, but I am absolutely frothing the scarf belt trend and I am also loving seeing brooches make a return — I'm just obsessed. Both trends remind me of both of my grandmothers — I've been using some of their silk scarves and brooches I've inherited, so perhaps that's why I'm loving these trends!
How do you stay up to date with fashion trends?
I love following creative stylists (shoutout to Stuart Walford) on Instagram and I am a sucker for watching what's coming out of fashion shows overseas. I love seeing what's hitting the runways —in particular, at Paris Fashion Week. I just wish I could sit outside all those shows and people watch!
What are your favourite Mimco pieces within our April, May and June Collection?
Really enjoying the animal prints and the weave bags! I also think the east west bags are sick!
What’s your top styling tip for anyone wanting to incorporate pieces from the collection into their everyday look?
My top styling tip for anyone looking to incorporate pieces from the upcoming collection into their everyday wardrobe is to have fun with statement pieces/prints and blend that with basics, like a white tee. These pieces can take centre stage — a classic white tee with the zebra scarf, a boho type bag and some bold jewellery pieces is such a great way to elevate the everyday.
What’s your top styling tip for anyone wanting to incorporate pieces from the collection into their everyday look?
Choose pieces you’ll reach for again and again. Styling becomes effortless when accessories feel like a part of your everyday uniform rather than something saved for special occasions. The more you wear them, the more natural they feel.
What are the three essential accessories in your wardrobe?
Gold hoops, a big bag for all my shit and my specs (I swear my eyesight is getting worse over time, gah!)
What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of Mimco / what do you love most about Mimco?
ICONIC! Surely we can all say that literally everyone — yes everyone — has owned a Mimco bag over the years? Mimco is the fabric of the Australian accessories scene! For me, I think Mimco is the brand I so, so badly wanted when I was a teenager — it means so much to so many. I really love the direction Mimco is taking of late — it feels incredibly fresh, fashionable and different for the brand.
